GP Surgeries – core opening times

Bolton’s GP surgeries are open from 8.00am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday, including Wednesday afternoons.

Parents will be pleased to know that children under 12 must be assessed on the same day if they call their GP for an appointment. This could be a telephone consultation to begin with however, a child may be invited down to the practice if required. In cases where a child needs urgent hospital care, this can be arranged directly by the GP.

These opening times are a core component of the Bolton Quality Contract – an initiative developed by the CCG to enable the public to gain easier access to their GP.

Access to GP surgeries outside of core hours

If you require an appointment between 6.30pm and 9.30pm Monday to Friday or a morning appointment at the weekend, contact your GP practice as usual, and you will be advised to attend one of three hubs, currently at:

Waters Meeting Health Centre, Winifred Kettle Centre and the Urgent Treatment Centre, based at the Royal Bolton Hospital (access via Main Entrance).

If you need urgent help from a GP, day or night, please ring your GP practice as normal and you'll be directed to the right service at the right time.

Pharmacy

Many medicines are available at your local pharmacy without a prescription, and lots of Bolton pharmacies are open at evenings and weekends. You may want to visit a pharmacy if you are suffering with diarrhoea/vomiting, headaches and severe coughs etc.

To find your nearest doctor, dentist, pharmacy, or other service, enter your postcode into the box above and click on search. Or, alternatively select a service from the list to the right.

Self Care

Lots of minor illnesses can be effectively treated at home. Keep a well stocked medicine cabinet to help relieve any minor symptoms. An example of when you should self care would be hangovers, minor cuts and bruises along with coughs and colds.

A&E is for serious injuries and life threatening conditions only. If you go to A&E with minor health problems you may be turned away and directed to a more suitable NHS service.
